Ben has this new phrase: "what are we doing here?" It strikes me as strange since it seems like a clear question, but what is he really asking? He says it in the middle of dinner or when he is just playing; he'll look at us and ask "what are we doing here?" And my mental response was...What AM I doing here? How did I get to this place in my life and who is this curious child asking me questions so intently? Do you ever have that moment? The one that makes you stop and think...how do I have two children? How is this possible?! And when exactly did this all occur? Maybe it is Mommy Brain, or lack of sleep, or that time is just passing by us so fast. I never really identified with the phrase:
"who are these children and why
"who are these children and why
are they calling me Mommy?"
before, but now it is all too true! It makes me think, well, I guess they just let ANYONE have children; I never was given a written exam, interviewed or even given an instruction manual. (None of which are bad ideas before one conceives!) David has this adorable cousin, Anne, who has come to the house to help me with the kids some this summer. She is a senior in high school and is so looking forward to what her future has in store. I look at her and think, "shouldn't I be the one doing the babysitting? How am I on the other side of this equation? And how does she see me and the way I am with my children and the way I run my household? Hopefully she would see me as a good example and really great mom; I don't know. It changes things when you look from someone else's perspective. It is funny how a three year old can make you think. What are we doing here? Quite a profound question from such a little guy. It is far from fulfilled everyday, but I hope that I am savoring the moment, living life consiously and enjoying the ride.
